Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — NKJV
Part of the Nature of Hell study.
The Common Reading
“Death” here means spiritual death — separation from God in a conscious, eternal state. Physical death is not the full wage; the full wage is eternal conscious torment in the lake of fire. “Death” is a euphemism for ongoing spiritual ruin.
What the Passage Actually Says
Death Means Death
G2288 thanatos — death. The ordinary Greek word for death — cessation of life. Paul uses this word throughout Romans to mean exactly what it says:
- Rom 5:12 — “death passed upon all men” — physical, universal death
- Rom 5:14 — “death reigned from Adam to Moses” — actual dying
- Rom 8:2 — “the law of sin and death” — death as the end of sin’s process
When Paul wants to describe spiritual separation, he uses different language: “dead in trespasses” (Eph 2:1, G3498 nekros), “alienated from the life of God” (Eph 4:18). In Romans 6:23, he uses thanatos — death itself, not a metaphor for separation.
Wages Are Payment, Not Punishment
G3800 opsonion — wages, pay, soldier’s stipend. This is payment for service rendered. You worked for sin; you earned death. The transaction is complete when the wage is paid. A wage is not ongoing — it settles the account.
Compare: a soldier receives his pay and the obligation is discharged. The wage of sin is death — and when death is paid, the account is closed. Not “the wage of sin is eternal ongoing payment.”
The Contrast: Life vs. Death
The verse sets up a direct opposition:
| Sin’s wage | God’s gift |
|---|---|
| Death (G2288 thanatos) | Eternal life (G166 aionios + G2222 zoe) |
If “eternal life” means conscious, ongoing existence — then “death” means the OPPOSITE: non-existence, cessation. The contrast is existence vs. non-existence. Life vs. death. Being vs. not being.
If “death” actually meant “eternal conscious torment,” then the verse would read: “the wages of sin is eternal conscious torment, but the gift of God is eternal life.” Two eternal conscious states — one bad, one good. But Paul didn’t write that. He wrote DEATH vs. LIFE. The opposites are absolute.
The Frame for All Other Passages
This verse provides the interpretive frame for every passage about the fate of the wicked. Whatever “eternal fire,” “lake of fire,” “second death,” and “everlasting punishment” mean — they must be consistent with “the wages of sin is death.” If any reading of those passages produces “eternal conscious torment,” it contradicts Paul’s plain statement here.
Harmony
- G2288 thanatos means death — cessation of life. Paul uses it for actual death throughout Romans.
- Wages settle an account — G3800 opsonion is a one-time payment. The transaction is complete.
- The contrast is death vs. life — not torment vs. bliss. Existence vs. non-existence.
- This is the interpretive frame — all other passages about the wicked’s fate must be consistent with “the wages of sin is death.”
- The gift is eternal LIFE — the emphasis on “life” as God’s gift implies that without the gift, there is no life. Not diminished life. No life.
